Abstract

Understanding Dadru (Dermatophytosis) In India: Insights from Classical Ayurveda

Abstract

Dadru is a skin disease described in Ayurveda correlated with the dermatophytosis conditions in contemporary science due to its clinico-pathological relevance. Its incidence rate is increasing day by day due to various contributing factors such as antifungal drug resistance, epidemiological conditions, poor sanitation etc. The biggest challenge in its mitigation is preventing its recurrence. The goal of the treatment of the disease is to understand its pathology related with its personal and general etiology. The prevalence rate can be minimized by following the proper preventive and curative measures discussed here. Various investigations, such as skin scarping for fungus by 10 % KOH (potassium hydroxide) , fungal culture, direct PCR, antifungal susceptibility testing are available to identify the specific fungal strain, which will be helpful in treating the disease and recalcitrant cases. Along with this, the regional and topographical species prevalence must be analyzed. So, that the physician can understand the area wise pattern and pesentation of dermatophytosis.  Screening of the fungal species should be done to analyze the cause of recurrence. Many of the classical formulations in Ayurveda have excellent results in the management of Dadru, both externally and internally. Indication of all the formulation differs from one person to another. Maintenance of personal hygiene and dietary restriction is mandatory but there is also huge need of analyzing the antifungal property of the formulation.  Multicentric, large scale randomized controlled clinical trials should be conducted pan India for validation of the positive result of the classical formulations upon Dadru, as described in Ayurveda.
